The Island and the Forest: A Knitted Correspondence (Laine Publishing) offers 12 timeless knitting patterns by Erika Åberg & Lotta H. Löthgren. “This book is our attempt to interpret our surroundings – the landscape, its atmosphere and the weather – through our stitches,” explain Erika and Lotta.

“The Island and the Forest: A Knitted Correspondence” is an exchange of letters and knitting patterns between two Swedish designers: Erika Åberg, on the island of Gotland, and Lotta H. Löthgren, in the southeast forest. The chapters explore the four elements – earth, water, fire, and air – the cycle of the seasons, and the natural world. In their letters, Erika and Lotta share their reflections on daily joys and how they approach big existential questions: meaning, creativity, and a sense of belonging.

Erika Åberg is a knitwear designer and author. She lives with her family and dog on Gotland, an island off the east coast of Sweden. Deeply attached to Scandinavian craftsmanship, her designs draw inspiration from her love of nature, wool, and island life. She organizes wool trips and hikes to destinations like Gotland, Shetland, and Iceland. “The Island and the Forest” is her eleventh book.

Lotta H. Löthgren is a knitwear designer, author, and wool dyer. She lives with her family, dogs, and chickens in a village in southeastern Sweden, where she also runs a wool shop. As a designer, she loves to translate the natural world into garments. Her first book, “Observations: Knitting and Essays from the Forest,” was published by Laine Publishing in 2023.
